Whatnot Fee Calculator
Whatnot charges 8% commission on the item and 2.9% + $0.30 processing on the whole transaction — including shipping and tax. Live selling moves volume fast, but giveaways and shipping subsidies can turn a good show into a break-even one.
How Whatnot fees work
Whatnot is a live-auction marketplace, and its fee structure is two-part: a commission on the item and payment processing on the transaction. Unlike Etsy or eBay, the commission does not apply to shipping, which matters in live selling where shipping is often a bigger share of the sale than the item itself.
| Charge | Rate | Charged on |
|---|---|---|
| Commission | 8% (6% for some coins and cards) | Item (hammer) price only |
| Payment processing | 2.9% + $0.30 | Item + shipping + tax |
| Shipping label | your cost | Paid by you unless charged to the buyer |
| Giveaways / subsidies | your choice | Per show, not per sale |
Where live selling loses money
The hammer price is set in real time by the room, so you cannot re-price an item after the fact. Two costs do the damage: shipping charged below cost — a $6 flat rate against a $9 label on every sale — and giveaways treated as free. A $5 giveaway per sale on a $45 item is 11% of revenue; it needs to be bought with a specific number of extra bids, not with hope.
Because processing is charged on the total including tax, a high-tax state's buyers cost you slightly more per sale. It is a small effect — 2.9% of the tax — but it is real, and it is why the calculator asks for tax separately rather than lumping it in.
Whatnot Fee Calculator — FAQ
How much does Whatnot take per sale in 2026?
An 8% commission on the item price for most categories — 6% for some coins, currency and card categories — plus payment processing of 2.9% + $0.30 on the total transaction including shipping and tax. You also pay for the shipping label unless you charge the buyer.
Is Whatnot commission charged on shipping?
No. The commission applies to the item price only, which is unusual among marketplaces — Etsy, eBay and Walmart all include shipping in their fee base. Payment processing, however, is charged on the full transaction including shipping and tax.
Do giveaways cost the seller anything?
Yes. You pay for the item given away and for its shipping, and on top of that processing applies to the transaction. Giveaways do not attract commission on the item, but they are a real cost and should be budgeted per show rather than treated as marketing that costs nothing.
What is a good margin for Whatnot live selling?
Aim for at least 25–30% after commission, processing, label and cost of goods. Live selling compresses prices because the room sets them, so a category that needs a 40% margin to survive will not work on Whatnot at all.
Why does my Whatnot payout differ from the hammer price?
The payout is the hammer price plus shipping collected, minus commission, minus 2.9% + $0.30 processing on the whole transaction, minus the label you bought, minus any giveaways or subsidies. Tax collected is passed through and should not be counted as revenue.
